An Honest and Fun Note on Brindle Color History

Unlike Chocolate, Biewer, and Gold Dust color expressions, which are generally understood as naturally occurring recessive color genetics within Yorkie and Biewer-type lines, brindle has a different history.
Brindle was likely introduced into rare-color Yorkie lines through careful outcrossing to breeds where brindle naturally occurs, followed by generations of selective breeding back toward Yorkshire Terrier type, size, coat, temperament, and companion qualities.
Dr. Robin Taylor, DVM, imported some of the earliest known Chocolate Brindle and Black or Tiger Brindle Yorkies to arrive in the United States. When these early dogs were DNA tested, some showed trace ancestry from breeds such as Havanese and/or Chihuahua, both of which can naturally carry brindle coloring.
This kind of careful historical color development has been used in the dog world not only to introduce colors into established breeds, but also in the creation and refinement of breeds themselves.
At Elite Yorkies & Biewers, we believe transparency matters. Rare color should never be presented without knowledge, history, and responsible care.
